Hello there! I'm Dora. I am an aspiring environmental journalist and urban planner. I’m in my third year of university and an active yoga student.
I started practicing yoga almost by accident. As a busy undergrad student, I admittedly slacked on any type of consistent exercise (running to catch a bus isn't an Olympic sport…yet). Unsurprisingly enough, I'd gained a bit of weight, which I wasn't happy with, so I started long distance running. While the running helped me physically feel stronger, I noticed my mind was not up to pace. While passing a bulletin board, I came across a restorative yoga class ad and decided to attend.
My experience was in the class was profound, and it was at this point I decided to couple my running with some yoga to achieve some extra space, both in the body and mind. And for two years, yoga grew from a post-workout hobby, to a practice I couldn’t be without during my week.
One of my favourite things about yoga is how you're always learning to do more and be more, but at your own pace. It’s always funny to me how different variations of stretches of seemingly simpler poses have something to teach you, even if you've been doing them for years. The more I practice, the more I can pay attention to the little details, like improving on my alignment, or noticing the stresses in different parts of my body.
Still, for me, one of the best parts about yoga is how it changed my relationship with my body. Yoga became less of a workout and something more natural to me. Doing yoga isn't a chore or something I have to remind myself to do, but something I actively look forward to every day. It has also helped me immensely when it comes to dealing with my school stresses. It's been a wonderful constant, a time in my day when my brain will quiet down and I will feel truly at peace with myself no matter what's going on with my life.
I found myself at the Zenergy Yoga around August of 2015. The studio was spotless and teachers were all welcoming and knowledgeable—encouraging everyone to work at their own pace and help them meet their individual goals. I had high hopes, but could never have imagined how, in such a short time frame, I would be so dramatically impacted. Since I started my yoga practice with Zenergy, I feel lighter, happier, and more much more mindful—almost like a different person. My mind feels at peace, and I now have time to really think about how I will peruse my post-academic goals. Also the back pains I frequently got from running lessened, and as time went on I noticed I felt much less exhausted by even the end of my longest days.
If I had a dollar for every time someone has said to me "What happened to you?!? You're glowing!" I could buy my own yoga studio.
